We found that very few sites were written up in hiking books or other sources, so we had to figur out our own methods of sniffing them out. The we deplored the way that the anthropologists kept mum, we could understand their reasoning when we hit one of our favorite sites only to find that all the glyphs had been chalked.Granny Jhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07302978680897139954noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237189728661420490.post-57683450935310424142009-06-09T13:42:25.810-07:002009-06-09T13:42:25.810-07:00First of all: YAY! Recently I went on the hunt to find Dirty Harry's truck. After two attempts I was wondering why the people who had found it wouldn't just give me the darn GPS coordinates or at least a better description!

Then, on the third attempt; soaking wet up to my waist, exhausted from the heat, and so ready to just turn around and say forget it...We found the truck. It was the most amazing feeling to find something that was so hard for others to find. When I wrote my trip report you can be sure that I wasn't specific on the details. The truck must be earned.

I wish I knew of more secret hikes, but the mountains are out there for me to explore and find them on my own... or maybe I can make friends with someone who knows ;)

Thanks for all your reports. Keep them coming!!stacy mariehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17179948762304919497noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237189728661420490.post-9314820972308235582009-05-27T06:37:10.813-07:002009-05-27T06:37:10.813-07:00Excellent write-up Karen! I also have mixed opinions about such policy. But I won't get into them here.

The internet is a powerful tool. The information is out there if you know where and how to look.

Loving the blog!Don Geyerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10157757077302628710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237189728661420490.post-70373492301046237462009-05-25T13:37:38.022-07:002009-05-25T13:37:38.022-07:00That's a good question. However, having worked with publishers, I can tell you that they (editors, etc.) may or may not know whether or they should consider publishing hikes that fall into that "gray area". Not everyone who works for a publishing company is a hiker. Sadly, I can also tell you that there are some guidebooks on the shelves these days where the authors have gleaned their information from other guidebooks rather than hiking the trails. I've made some mistakes - for sure - but I have always done my research on foot first-hand rather than taking someone else's word for the condition or the location of a trail.karenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16419624724854069991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237189728661420490.post-33240394301628876452009-05-24T09:48:16.950-07:002009-05-24T09:48:16.950-07:00An interesting dilemma to be sure. I do wonder if the people who object to sharing secret places also call up the publishers of guidebooks to berate them for sharing lesser know trails?Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02933352623507215068noreply@blogger.com
